Flexographic printing

Overview

The basis of the word  "Flexo" is Latin word flexibilis, what means - flexible; and the Greek word graphein, what means - to write or to draw.

Flexography is used for printing on a variety of packaging, plastic bags, paper, corrugated cardboard, in the labels production and many others.

Now flexography is one of the major type of printing.

History

First time something like flexography were used in 19th century at the wallpapers printing. However, the inventor of this kind of print process can be considered the owner of the German engineering company - Karl Holvego.

Originally flexography been used for sealing the surfaces of the paper bags and other packaging materials.

The next step in the flexo print development started around 1912, when the Paris company "Cellophane" started production of the plastic bags with inscriptions and images printed with aniline inks.

Around 1952 with advent of the new sensing surfaces in the market, flexo print goes to the next stage of the inks development.

Inks

Namely because of inks can be achieved brightness, saturation and gloss required for many types of packaging.

Water-based inks considered as the most environmentally friendly and easy to use.

Pigments

Pigments are the primary constituents of inks. More often by word "inks" meant a suspension of pigments or blends of definite fillers.
Acrylic emulsion is the binder of our pigments. Color and opacity depends on the type of the pigment.
Opacity is the ability of the pigment or inks cover the surface of substrate with uniform application.
Pigments has a certain color due to the ability of selectively reflect visible light rays.
Pigment absorb the rays selectively: one part of the rays which make the daylight is absorbed, and the other part reflect from the pigment surface, creating in our eyes a certain color perception.
For example, if the pigment absorbs violet, blue, green, yellow rays and reflect red, then the surface is perceived as red color.
Pigment that reflect almost all incident light, appears as white, and pigment that absorb incident light rays across the whole spectrum is black.
